To make the most of your stay, particularly during the cooler months, embracing the climate is something that makes Tenterfield one of the coldest towns in this part of the region. The reverse-cycle air conditioning and electric blankets work perfectly well, but pack some warm clothing as well. If you arrive during winter, put your heating on immediately and never get into bed before checking whether the electric blanket has been switched on or not-a wise ritual to practice! Highly recommended for this reason are what have been termed “Spa Rooms”; there is nothing better than a hot hydrotherapy bath when outside temperatures fall below freezing.

When it comes to food, the motel does excellent room service breakfasts (big country breakfast is a favorite) but has charge-back arrangements with several local venues. Two great options within walking distance are the Commercial Boutique Hotel (a restored art deco pub) and the Telegraph Hotel-both offer high-quality steaks and pub fare. Tenterfield is a small town so remember that most kitchens will have an earlier closing time than you’re probably used to in the city; usually by 8:00 or 8:30 pm at the latest. Don’t leave your dinner plans until late or you’ll be using that toaster and microwave in your room.

And finally, never forget to pump your hosts for local knowledge. The owners of Settlers Motor Inn are long-term residents and have a handle on road conditions as well as the best fisheries. If you’re heading coastwards via the Bruxner Highway or just bashing around granite national parks, ask about current road conditions or when is a good time to see wallabies – yes, settle all accounts with them! Also if you happen to be an ultra-light sleeper (the motel is quiet) asking for a unit at the very back of the complex furthest from highway signage will ensure total silence broken only by morning magpie song.
